400 Year Commemoration: The Journey and #RememberThe400

Genesis Advance Performing Arts Society (GAPAS) was excited to present “The Journey” as part of the #RememberThe400 project (visit rememberthe400.com for more information). The Journey is a unique artistic presentation that aligns perfectly with the 400-year commemoration of the first Africans arriving in Hampton, Virginia, in the latter part of August 1619. The musical production was accompanied by an art show and a series of educational workshops celebrating the strength and resolve of a captive people and their contributions to the fabric of humanity.

Friday, 23 August 2019 — 5 p.m. at The American Theatre, 125 E Mellen St, Hampton, VA

GAPAS presents “The Journey” — a powerful story of a people dispersed from the Promised Land to Ghana, Nigeria, West Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas. Witness this amazing journey through a theatrical tapestry of song, spoken word and dance.

About GAPAS

Shadrock Porter is well known for his creation “Shadow of the Slaves”, a theatrical play honouring Canada for being a haven for slaves during the era of the Underground Railroad; this production made its mark at the Harbourfront Theatre. He is also known for “The Journey”, a sold-out musical production in New York, London and Toronto, to name a few locations.

Our Proposal

“The Journey” is the most spectacular and thought-provoking production portraying the story of an enslaved people transported from the coast of West Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas.
